Statement on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

Thursday, 24 February, 2022
ukraine

I am appalled and profoundly concerned that President Putin of Russia has unleashed a war of aggression against its peaceful neighbour, Ukraine.

This is a horrific attack on a democratic, sovereign European nation, as well as a clear violation of Russia’s obligations under international law, including the United Nations Charter.

The UK, together with our partners and allies, will respond and will hold the Russian government to account. We stand with Ukraine in this moment of agony and will always defend Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and the Ukrainian people’s right to choose their own destiny.

Our thoughts are with them during this dark moment and we condemn Russia's actions in the strongest possible terms.

The Prime Minister has spoken with Ukrainian President Zelensky to discuss next steps and we are working closely with our partners and allies to introduce a package of massive and severe sanctions against Russia. We are also working closely with our NATO allies to increase defence on NATO's Eastern flank.

This is an attack on Ukraine, its people, and democracy itself and I support the Prime Minister's commitment that the UK will do everything possible to support Ukraine.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to nominate the area of West Oxfordshire which they think would benefit most from noise camera technology to combat noise pollution from illegally modified vehicles.
